Using Green Roof Technology
In general Green Roofs add the following general benefits:
Storm Water Management – green roofs help to prevent excess storm water discharge, reducing stress on municipal storm drain systems and surrounding watersheds.
Energy Conservation – a green roof can typically reduce indoor temperatures from 6 to 8 degrees and can reduce air conditioning cost 25 to 50 percent in a single story building. In doing so, a green roof can reduce the need for air conditioning and therefore require smaller cooling systems, lower capital costs and lower operating cost. In cold/winter conditions, a green roof traps blowing snow and actually adds to the insulating value of the roof.
Urban Heat Island Mitigation – urban heat island effect is the temperature difference between urban and rural areas. The temperature in a highly populated city is greater than its surrounding areas because of heat absorbing buildings, pavement and hot air from cooling systems. A green roof will act as an umbrella and shade and insulate the building, and the oxygen that is released as well as the evaporated water from the plant helps make the air cooler.
Noise Reduction – a green roof acts as an acoustic insulator and can reduce indoor sound by as much as 40 decibels.
